Psychoedukation für Patienten und Angehörige - als Familienintervention oder bifokal umgesetzt - stellt eine kurz- und langfristig wirksame Behandlungsmethode bei Schizophrenie dar. Die Rückfallraten werden reduziert, das krankheitsbezogene Wissen, die Compliance, das psychosoziale Funktionsniveau und auch die Lebensqualität werden verbessert. Aus Sicht der Betroffenen sind die Kompetenzerweiterung, die therapeutische Beziehung und der Austausch in der Gruppe wichtige Wirkfaktoren der Psychoedukation. Angehörige erleben eine emotionale Entlastung, auch wenn objektive Belastungen fortbestehen. Neue Entwicklungen in Forschung und Praxis beziehen sich auf ergänzende Psychoedukationsmodule, auf Anpassungen bewährter Programme für spezifische Zielgruppen, auf neuartige, psychoedukativ orientierte Informationsvermittlungsformen, wie Peer- to-Peer-Gruppen, Videos oder Internetinterventionen, sowie auf neue Zielkriterien. Trotz großen wissenschaftlichen Engagements und ausreichender Evidenz ist noch nicht sichergestellt, dass psychoedukative Gruppen für Patienten und Angehörige tatsächlich flächendeckend sowohl im stationären als auch im komplementären und ambulanten Bereich routinemäßig durchgeführt werden. Dieser Artikel soll dazu animieren, sich für die praktische Umsetzung der Psychoedukation in der Schizophreniebehandlung unter Einbeziehung der Angehörigen zu engagieren.
