Empathie ist als Therapeutenvariable wichtiger Untersuchungsgegenstand der Psychotherapieforschung. Zugleich ist das Empathievermögen jedoch auch eine Patientenvariable, die den Behandlungserfolg beeinflussen kann. Als Bestandteil klinischer Symptomatik ist ein verändertes Empathieerleben bisher wenig im Fokus klinisch-psychologischer Forschung. Meist werden Konzepte wie Perspektivenübernahme / «Theory of Mind», Emotionsregulation und Alexithymie untersucht, nicht aber Empathie selbst. Der vorliegende Übersichtsartikel hat zum Ziel, Erkenntnisse der Neurowissenschaften in Bezug auf Empathie zusammenzufassen und störungsspezifisch verändertes Empathieerleben aufzuzeigen. Weiterhin sollen diese für die Psychotherapie nutzbar gemacht werden, um neue Ansatzpunkte für psychotherapeutische Interventionen zu generieren.
