Eine «Kliniksuizidforschung» zur Untersuchung von Suiziden unter (teil-)stationären Rahmenbedingungen gibt es in Deutschland seit den 1970er Jahren. Bis heute sind zwei Ergebnisse besonders wichtig und gesichert, zum einen, dass es einen realen Suizidzuwachs in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren gab, und zum andern, dass besonders junge schizophrene Männer betroffen waren. Der Anteil schizophren Kranker liegt in den meisten Studien bei 40-60%, der affektiv Kranker bei 20-30%. Kliniksuizid bei Schizophrenie ist in Zusammenhang mit dem Krankheitsverlauf zu sehen; Leidensdruck und Wissen um den Verlauf spielen eine wichtige Rolle in der Suiziddynamik.
