Stenosis of the distal urethra appeared to be the cause of recurrent urinary infection, diffuse troubles of the abdomen and enuresis in 168 of 272 girls (61.6%). Diagnosis was made by calibration with bougies à boule. Alterations of the urethra on voiding cystourethrogram are no definite criteria for stenosis. Treatment consisted of internal urethrotomy with the Otis urethrotome in 120 cases. 1–2 years after treatment 76 patients (63.2%) were cured, fair results were noted in 21 cases (17.5%). Recurrent urinary infection was removed in 70.7%, vesicoureteral reflux disappeared in 44.8% by internal urethrotomy alone. The low estrogen level is discussed as the cause of distal stenosis of the urethra.
