Report on a comparative clinical follow-up study to evaluate late results (up to 4 years) of 48 poor surgical risk patients treated by cryosurgery of the prostate (CSP) and 61 patients randomly selected from 306 patients which were treated by transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Only extremely elderly and risky patients should be considered candidates for CSP as this offers only limited advantages over sole palliative procedures of urinary diversion or relief of urinary obstruction. If the patients do not belong to the poor or very poor surgical risk category, patients usually do far better after TURP than after cryosurgical intervention.
