The structure and development of the muscles of the bladder and the urethra were investigated in serial sections of human fetuses of 6–20 cm crown-rump length and in serial sections of this area in a newborn male and a 24-year-old adult male. We made the following findings: (1) The detrusor system does not take part in the formation of the urethral muscular system, it only forms a loop around the proximal part of the urethra. (2) The trigonal system forms a true sphincter in both males and females. In males it is more proximal than in females. (3) In the adult males studied, the external sphincter consists of both smooth and striated cir cular muscle. (4) Experience from the female fetus studied suggests that both muscular types are also present in the adult female.
