Using hypothermia, mechanical organ perfusion and simultaneous control of increased pressures, swine kidneys could be conserved for up to 48 hours. Composition of the perfusion solution and rate of perfusion are decisive for success in preservation. Function was resumed in the kidney, implanted after 24 hours conservation, only when, by mechanical perfusion, a hyperosmolar homologous plasma solution was used and the perfusion volume did not exceed 700 ml/h. Increase of kidney weight, rise of arterial vascular resistance, the perfusate oxal-acet-transaminase and lactate-dehydrogenase are determinates in judging later renal function.
