Transfusion-transmitted prion disease has captured the attention of the transfusion community since two cases recently appeared. Considerable investigative effort has been focused upon prion disease in the last 30 years;however, the basic research has not yet led to a full understanding of the disease processes that would allow for an informed risk assessment. Consequently, strategies for preventing the disease are being pursued, and among them is the removal or reduction of prion from blood products by filtration. This work reviews the approaches used to characterize the performance of prion reduction filtration technology for blood products destined for transfusion.
