In this paper we describe how data arising from different laboratories within one hospital can be automatically integrated into a haematology database that includes not only the demographic data of patients but also all the histograms, scattergrams and image data. Three instruments (the XE-2100 TM haematology analyser, the PDDPSTM work area management system and the LAFIATM image database) are necessary for this and can be obtained from the Sysmex Corporation. With some manual work, information essential for patient management (type of disease, chemotherapy protocols) can be included. This is the most comprehensive system currently available on the market and appears to be invaluable for a number of hospitals engaged in patient care in haematology and oncology.
