Glukose ist wichtig für die Aufrechterhaltung der Energieleistungen des Gehirns, der Erythrozyten, des Knochenmarks, des peripheren Nervengewebes, des Nierenmarks und des Granulationsgewebes. Der tägliche Minimalbedarf an Glukose beträgt etwa 180 Gramm, im Fall gröβerer Verletzungen kann jedoch der Bedarf um weitere 180 Gramm ansteigen. In der parenteralen Ernährung sollte der Minimalbedarf an Glukose in Form von Glukose verabreicht werden. Darüber hinaus wird Glukose auch bei gröβeren Zufuhrmengen sowohl von Stoffwechselgesunden als auch von asymptomatischen Diabetikern ausgezeichnet verwertet. Während mehrstündiger Glukoseinfusionen bei gleichbleibender Zufuhrgeschwindigkeit läβt sich anhand der Plasmaspiegelhöhe und der Art des Kurvenverlaufs das Stadium des potentiellen Diabetes und des asymptomatischen Diabetes von demjenigen Gesunder abgrenzen.
