As determined by ultramicrocryoscopy, the osmolality of tissue fluid obtained by centrifugation of small pieces of renal cortex from dehydrated rats was significantly greater than that of systemic plasma (+ 159 ± 12 mosm kg-1 water). Infusion of mannitol or saline resulted in marked decreases in tissue fluid osmolality when compared with hydropaenic animals, but the differences from plasma (44 ± 10 and 75 ± 9 mosm kg-1 water, respectively) were still significantly greater than zero. The data are discussed in relation to theoretical models of tubular fluid reabsorption.
