eBooks

We are working towards ensuring that our eBook content has a logical reading order and headings, as well as sufficient color contrast and easy-to-read fonts. We are also working towards ensuring the alternative text is available for all images. We aim for these features to be available in eBooks published after July 2025.

Journals

We are committed to enhancing the accessibility of our content. We are currently working towards ensuring that headings and structural elements are present for a clear and logical layout. We also strive to use easy-to-read fonts and sufficient color contrast. We aim for these features to be available for all journal articles published after July 2025.

e-Learning

Our e-learning courses run in a cloud-based learning management system, using MP4, HTML, and LMS-specific formats. Our courses use headings and other structural elements to provide a clear and logical structure, ensuring that the content can be read by screen readers and other assistive technologies. We also make sure that the fonts we use are easy to read and that there is enough color contrast between the text and background, as well as within the figures. Most interactive elements can be accessed and operated using a keyboard. When an interactive element is not accessible via keyboard, we ensure all important information is accessible outside of the interaction. Alternative text is provided for all figures in courses published after April 2025. Currently, multiple choice answers to courses quizzes are not compatible with screen readers, and we are working with our external platform provider to fix this.

Animations

Our animated videos are created to ensure clarity and ease of comprehension for all viewers. This means text and important visual elements are large, clear, and high contrast colors are used. Captions are available on all videos. Full transcripts are available where the platforms hosting the videos allow this function.

Podcasts

Our audio podcasts are accompanied by transcripts and captions, making these accessible to individuals with hearing impairments.

Summary Sheets

Our summary sheets are downloadable PDF files. These are created to ensure clarity and ease of comprehension for all viewers. Our summaries use headings and other structural elements to provide a clear and logical structure, ensuring that the content can be read by screen readers and other assistive technologies. Text and important visual elements are large, clear, and high contrast colors are used.

Webinars

Our webinars are hosted using platforms that support accessibility features, including captions. For the Karger In Conversation event series, we also provide full transcripts to ensure accessibility for individuals with hearing impairments.

Disproportionate Burden

PDF and Full Text Accessibility

We have evaluated the cost and resources needed to make our entire catalogue of journal and eBook PDF content fully accessible. At this time, we are unable to commit to modifying this content. However, please note that our article full text fulfills the majority of the accessibility requirements, but does not include alternative text or maintain the necessary contrast ratio for image-based features. In addition, we do provide on demand options for both our journal articles and eBooks.

Alternative Text

In terms of adding alternative text to all figures in our journal and eBook content, retrospectively, we have evaluated the costs and resources as well as additional burden on authors and editors and concluded that we are unable to add alternative text to our entire catalogue. We are however working towards ensuring that alternative text is available for all images in our journal articles published from 2026 onwards.

Accessibility Guidelines for Authors

At Karger, we are committed to making our content accessible to everyone. Our Accessibility Guidelines for Authors provide detailed instructions to ensure that our articles are inclusive and accessible to all readers. By following these guidelines, you help us create a more equitable and engaging experience for everyone.

Feedback and Contact Information

Your input is important for us, you can contact us with any accessibility related questions, feedback or assistance you need using our on demand request form.

On Demand Requests for Accessible Formats

If the content you are looking for is not available in a suitable format, we strive to provide one within as soon as possible. This service is available for scientific journal articles and eBooks (including individual chapters and entire books). You can place such request through our on demand request form.

For eBooks we can provide PDF or EPUB formats, and for individual book chapters and journal articles we can provide PDF format.

Please note that even though we will attempt to supply the format you need, this might not always be feasible as some of our content such as older digitized archive content from original printed sources might not be suitable to be used for such purposes. Please also note that at this stage we cannot guarantee the addition of alt text to the requested eBooks and journal articles, however all figures are accompanied by figure legends which are screen reader compatible.

We are also happy to provide institutions with source files for the creation of alternative accessible formats if needed.

Please be aware that we can only provide the requested format if the material has been legally acquired.
