Abstract
In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts hatten mehrere Otologen eine Stapesfixation als Ursache einer Schwerhörigkeit beschrieben; die älteste Quelle stammt von Antonio Maria Valsalva im 18. Jahrhundert. Aber es war Adam Politzer, Wien, der 1893 als erster die Otosklerose als eigenständiges Krankheitsbild erkannte und in seiner Entität beschrieb. Hingegen lehnte er die chirurgische Behandlung, wie sie 1876 von Kessel vorgeschlagen wurde, strikt ab, so dass es letztendlich bis 1956 dauerte, bis die heute übliche Operationstechnik der Stapesplastik publiziert wurde. Die Geschichte der Pathologie und Therapie der Otosklerose zeigt beispielhaft die Entwicklung der modernen Otologie.
