In vorausgegangenen Studien wurden in der Nasenschleimhaut von der unteren, mittleren oder oberen Nasenmuschel verschiedene Neuropeptide wie das vasoaktive intestinale Polypeptid (VIP), «calcitonin gene-related peptide» (CGRP), Substanz P (SP) und Somatostatin (SOM) nachgewiesen. In der vorliegenden Studie wurden 30 «hintere Muschelenden», die von Patienten mit behinderter Nasenatmung bei Septumdeviation und Muschelhyperplasia entnommen wurden, histologisch und immunhistochemisch untersucht. Das Verteilungsmuster fÜr VIP, CGRP, SP und SOM ergibt ein komplexes Netzwerk neuropeptidhaltiger Nervenfasern, das dem anderer Abschnitte der Nasenschleimhaut bis auf eine gesteigerte Expression von SOM entspricht.
