Einer der wichtigsten Forscher auf dem Gebiet der Gehörphysiologie ist der Biophysiker Georg von Békésy (1899–1972), Nobelpreisträger von 1961. Der gebürtige Ungar war zu diesem Zeitpunkt an der Harvard University in Cambridge (Mass., USA) tätig und wechselte später an die University of Hawaii in Honolulu. Wenig bekannt ist die Tatsache, dass Békésy als Zwölfjähriger mit seinen Eltern in die Schweiz kam und hier während eines mehr als 10 Jahre dauernden Aufenthaltes das Gymnasium besuchte und an der Universität Bern Naturwissenschaften studierte. Ziel dieses Artikels ist es, Békésys frühe Beziehungen zur Schweiz darzustellen. Ebenfalls dokumentiert wird eine der ersten Ehrungen Békésys, nämlich die Verleihung der Ehrendoktorwürde durch die Medizinische Fakultät der Universität Bern 1959. In gekürzter Form wurde die Arbeit anlässlich der Feier zu Békésys 100. Geburtstag an der ‘International Békésy Centenary Conference on Hearing and Related Sciences’ im Sommer 1999 in Budapest vorgetragen.
