A fine surface view of normal and inflamed pharyngeal tonsil was obtained by means of scanning electron microscope. The major surface of normal tonsil from young children was furnished with numerous cilia. However, most of the inflamed adenoids were covered with non-ciliated epithelial cells. Although cilia were present in infected adenoids they were considerably damaged. Ciliated columnar cells were evidently replaced by squamous cells following recurrent chronic infections. The present study revealed the presence of crypts in pharyngeal tonsils similar to those of the palatine tonsils. It is possible that pharyngeal tonsils may take part in the immunological process, particularly in these crypts.
