Acute and chronic manifestations of photosensitization were induced in ducklings by the oral administration of the dermatological drug methoxsalen in conjunction with exposure to sunlight. An acute keratoconjunctivitis, photophobia and epiphora were seen in all the affected birds and were followed by closure of the ocular fissure, mydriasis and in some cases ankyloblepharon. A severe pigmentary retinopathy was the most striking eye lesion. This latter change indicates the desirability of a careful appraisal of the use of this drug in medicine and it is suggested that patients under treatment be examined for any ocular side-effects.
