Abstract
Experimental uveitis in rabbits was obtained by injecting sterile horse serum into the vitreous. The following events have been demonstrated in the lens, when transparency was normal and the amount of glutathione (reduced form; GSH) only slightly affected: (1) the water content is diminished; (2) the cold-induced in vitro leakage of K+ is enhanced in lenses of uveitic eyes; (3)the K+/Na+ ratio diminution occurs in vivo after 36 days of uveal inflammation; (4) Na-K-ATPase shows no significant change in the lenses of uveitic eyes, and (5) a striking fall of the level of taurine was noted in the lenticular tissue; it occurred earlier than that of potassium and approximated the levels of the aqueous humor; this change probably also reflects an increased permeability of the membranes rather than a reduction in the transport activity across the lenticular epithelium.
