Von 268 primären Leberkarzinomen waren 81% hepatozellulärer und 14 % cholangiozellulärer Genese, 5 % waren Mischformen mit hepato-cholangiozellulären Elementen, 1% beinhaltete Mischtumore, welche aus Anteilen eines malignen Hepatoms und Formen eines Angiosarkoms bestanden. Hepatome traten im Gegensatz zu cholangiozellulären Karzinomen häufiger bei Männern auf. Der Altersgipfel aller primären Leberkarzinome lag zwischen dem 61. und 70. Lebensjahr. Während 79% aller Hepatome auf der Basis einer Leberzirrhose entstanden, fanden sich 71% der cholangiozellulären Karzinome in einer zirrhosefreien Leber. Hepatozelluläre und cholangiozelluläre Karzinome metastasierten in 66-67 % aller Fälle, wobei in erster Linie Gefäßeinbrüche sowie Lymphknoten-, Lungen- und intrahepatische Metastasen beobachtet wurden.
