Bei dem vom 11. bis 14. Mai 1979 in Bonn abgehaltenen 2. Internationalen Expertentreffen der Deutschung Stiftung für Krebsforschung über ‘Current Trends in Cancer Research’ handelte es sich um eine Konferenz, die diesmal unter ein spezielles Thema gestellt war: Sie war der kritischen Bewertung von sogenannten Tumormarkersubstanzen in all ihren Anwendungsbereichen in der onkologischen Klinik gewidmet. Ziel war es, zu möglichst klaren Vorstellungen über die sinnvolle Verwendung von Tumormarkern sowohl bei der Diagnose- und Prognosestellung der Krebserkrankung als auch bei der Überwachung der bereits diagnostizierten Patienten zu kommen. Darüberhinaus sollte über die Auswahl der für die verschiedenen Tumoren am besten geeigneten Tumormarker aus der Vielzahl der heute bekannnten Substanzen Klarheit gewonnen werden. Das Ergebnis der kritischen Überlegungen der Experten hat in der Beantwortung von drei grundsätzlichen Fragen seinen Niederschlag gefunden; diese Antworten könnten als Basis für Empfehlungen an alle onkologisch interessierten Kliniker dienen, die sich mit Tumormarkern bereits beschäftigten oder in Zukunft sich zu beschäftigen gedenken.
