Das vorrangige Ziel der European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) ist es, die Qualität der Medizinischen Onkologie durch das Entwickeln von Standards zu verbessern, die sicher-stellen, daß zertifizierte medizinische Onkologen das notwen-dige Wissen und die nötige Erfahrung besitzen, die für eine optimale Patientenversorgung erforderlich sind. Die Prüfung der ESMO, die 1989 erstmals durchgeführt wurde, qualifiziert einen medizinischen Onkologen als Fachmann seiner Diszi-plin. Um die ständig erforderliche Fortbildung zu gewährlei-sten, wurde neben der Prüfung mit dem Medical Oncologist’s Recertification Approval (ESMO-MORA) ein Programm ent-wickelt, das die regelmäßige Fortbildung im Fachbereich aner-kennt. Dieses System wurde 1994 in Ergänzung zur Zertifizie-rung eingeführt. Diese Anerkennung, die auf 5 Jahre befristet ist, soil die Fachkompetenz auf Dauer erkennbar machen.
