Der Wert biochemischer Tumormarker in der Diagnose, Beurteilung von Ausdehnung, Prognose und Behandlungserfolg von Krebserkrankungen ist gut dokumen-tiert. Für die Früherkennung von Krebs in der Normalbevölkerung sind jedoch Tumormarker derzeit nicht geeignet. Wesentliche Gründe dafür sind ihre zu niedrige Sensitivität und Spezifität, die niedrige Prävalenz von Krebserkrankungen und die häufig geringe Empfindlichkeit der Nachweisverfahren. Erfolgversprechender erscheint der Einsatz von Tumormarkem in der Früherkennung von Krebs in Bevölkerungsgruppen mit erhöhtem Krebsrisiko, und solche Studien scheinen sinnvoll und angezeigt.
