Die Bildung von Blutzellen ist bestimmt durch das Gleichgewicht zwischen stimulierenden und inhibierenden Molekülen und den Zellen, die entweder diese Moleküle bilden oder auf sie ansprechen. Die Bildung von erythropoetischen Zellkolonien ist von Erythropoetin und BPA («Burst promoting activity») abhängig. Granulopoetische Zellkolonien benötigen Granulozyten und/oder Makrophagenkolonien-stimulierende Faktoren (GM-CSF) für das Wachstum. Megaka-ryozytäre Vorläuferzellen bilden megakaryozytäre Zellkolonien, wenn Meg-CSF (megakaryozyte-CSF) und Thrombopoetin den Kulturen gegeben wird. Die Verfügbarkeit klonierter Regulationsmoleküle und gut charakterisierter Zellpopulationen ermöglichen die Forschung von Regulations-mechanismen. Die Regulation beinhaltet zelluläre Interaktionen so-wie Wechselwirkungen zwischen Rezeptoren und Regulationsfaktoren. Die HLA-class-II-Antigene sind ein Beispiel dafür.
