Individual plasma free amino acids in chronic uremics undergoing hemodialysis were found to be similar to patterns in normal and non-dialyzed uremic individuals. Clearance studies during hemodialysis demonstrated significant losses of amino acids into the dialysate (over eight times the amino acid content of plasma removed during 12 h of dialysis). Significantly, the loss of approximately 5500 micromoles of amino acids, representing a 4.79 g protein loss during the course of dialysis, was not reflected in coincident plasma concentrations. It is suggested that there is an added burden on protein homeostasis during intermittent and chronic hemodialysis.
