Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a rapidly growing worldwide non-communicable disease, which is estimated to affect 9.1% of the global population and contributes to a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Physical activity plays a major role in the prevention of numerous non-communicable diseases, and increasing evidence also suggests that regular physical activity and exercise have beneficial effects on CKD progression and CKD-related complications. This Topical Article Collection published in Kidney and Blood Pressure Research presents the highlights from the III National Conference of the Physical Exercise Working Group of the Italian Society of Nephrology, held on June 23, 2023, in Peschiera del Garda, Italy. The collection brings together research and review articles touching on different aspects from the implementation of physical exercise in clinical practice to the role of myokines in the pathophysiology of physical exercise in CKD and the impact of physical activity and exercise on CKD therapies and CKD-related complications.

This article collection was led by Yuri Battaglia (Department of Medicine, University of Verona, Verona, Italy) and Filippo Aucella (Nephrology and Dialysis Unit, Casa Solievo Della Sofferenza, San Giovanni Rotondo Foggia, Italy).

Conflict of Interest statement: Yuri Battaglia and Filippo Aucella have no Conflict of Interest to declare.
