Abstract
The sulfonylurea, chlorpropamide, has a well defined antidiuretic effect mediated both through increased ADH release and potentiation of ADH action on the kidney. In contrast, the sulfonylureas tolazamide, acetohexamide and glyburide have diuretic actions. The diuretic actions of glyburide is not mediated through inhibition of ADH release or interference with the renal action of ADH. Therefore glyburide, and presumably the other diuretic sulfonylureas, apparently have diuretic actions by means of a direct renal effect, perhaps by altering renal hemo-dynamics or by acting on the renal tubule.
