Abstract
An analysis of Erikson’s developmental model of the eight ages is presented, based on a generative rule approach to developmental theories. First, a set of rules generating descriptions of the Eriksonian developmental stages and their sequence is provided. These generative rules are based on three epigenetic trends, involving self, specificity, and exten-siveness, assumed to underly Erikson’s developmental model. Second, a model of the transition mechanism implied in Erikson’s model is provided, thus offering an explanation for actual state changes in a system denned by the stage and sequence rules. Preliminary tests for the descriptive adequacy of the stage and sequence rules and for the transition model are presented. The meaning of mismatches between Erikson’s original model and this reconstruction based on generative rules is discussed.
