This article presents a discussion of personality development as an educational objective. An approach is sketched in which personality is viewed as a high-level concept which refers to a person’s characteristic ways of interacting with the environment. The analysis focuses on the development of the person’s internal representation of the environment and the self (his or her world view), and on the social factors controlling his or her actions. Special attention is paid to the conditions for the individual’s development into an independent subject who is capable of adapting to and acting in a rapidly changing world. It is argued that these conditions are essential for the educational objective of comprehensive personality development.
