The author interprets Piaget’s epistemology as providing a framework for a relational approach to the development of social knowledge. The interpretation allows the subject to construct knowledge in cooperation with other subjects and thereby permits self-construction and social influence. Knowledge begins in interpersonal interactions which are converted into procedures and then reformed into relations. This framework may provide the grounds for a rapprochement between Piaget’s relational theory and positions outlined by dialectical psychologists.
