Abstract
This paper begins by considering the parallel between phases of a group member’s developing orientation to the group and phases of the ontogenesis of interpersonal orientations. The hypothesis of the research which is presented is that the sequence of the member’s developing orientations to the group may not only parallel ontogenetic phases in general but specifically recapitulate global aspects of his own ontogenesis. The results of the study indicate that members of higher judged levels of ontogenetic progression more closely approximate the predicted phasic group-orienting sequence. This finding is discussed in the context of a recapitulation theory.
