Das Hochschulstudium in den Niederlanden schliesst nicht mit einem Diplom oder Magistertitel ab, sondern mit dem Titel «Doctorandus», der schon die mögliche weitere Laufbahn impliziert. Die Habilitation gibt es nicht, dafür ist das Doktorat im Rahmen einer Promotion der höchste akademische Titel, den eine Universität verleihen kann, vergleichbar einem angloamerikanischen PhD. Der Autor beschreibt am eigenen Beispiel, wie er an der Erasmus-Universität Rotterdam seine «Proefschrift» mit dem Titel «The early human fetal ductus arteriosus» einreichte und dann nach erfolgreicher Verteidigung seiner Thesen promovierte.
