Eine Übersicht über die in den Jahren 1979–1993 hauptsächlich zu Erfahrungen und Erwartungen der Patientinnen bezüglich der gynäkologischen Untersuchung durchgeführten Stuien soil über die Arzt/Ärztin-Patientin-Beziehung in der Gynäkologie näheren Aufschluss geben. Die gynäkologische Untersuchung ist für viele Frauen in unterschiedlichem Ausmass mit negativen Gefühlen wie Angst vor der Entdeckung einer Erkrankung, vor Schmerzen, Verlegenheit oder Scham verbunden. Eine der wichtigsten Erwartungen, die in die Ärzte und Ärztinnen gesetzt wird, betrifft deren Gesprächsbereitschaft. Präferenzen der Patientinnen in bezug auf das Geschlecht von Arzt/Ärztin gehen eher in Richtung einer Bevorzugung von Ärztinnen, wobei für viele Frauen das Geschlecht keine Rolle spielt. Die recht unterschiedlichen Resultate der Studien lassen auf soziokulturelle Einflüsse schliessen und machen die Individualität der Bedürfnisse der Patientinnen, die demzufolge auch als Individuum behandelt werden sollten, deutlich.
