Am 1. Juli 1992 ist in Österreich ein Fortpflanzungsmedizingesetz (FMedG) in Kraft getreten, das die Reproduktionsmedizin nachhaltig beeinflussen wird. Das neue Gesetz verbietet gewisse Praktiken der medizinisch assistierten Zeugung schlechthin, beinhaltet aber zum überwiegenden Teil Regelungen, die man mit dem Schlagwort «staatliche Kontrolle der Fortpflanzungsmedizin» charakterisieren könnte. Schliesslich novelliert das FMedG auch das Kindschaftsrecht des allgemeinen bürgerlichen Gesetzbuches: Den Wunscheltern werden die alleinigen Rechte und Pfiichten gegenüber dem im Wege ärztlicher Zeugungshilfe entstandenen Kind zugeordnet.
