In den letzten Jahren hat der Anspruch der Gesellschaft an die Qualität der Forschung deutlich zugenommen. Vor allem im Zusammenhang mit der Integration Europas ist es angebracht, Überlegungen über konzeptionelle und ethische Probleme klinischer Forschung anzustellen. Nährböden fur die klinische Forschung sind die technische Entwicklung sowie Ergebnisse der Grundlagen- und pharmakologischen Forschung. Motor fur die Weiterentwicklung ist die Verpflichtung, stets den neuesten Stand des Wissens in die gängige Therapie umzusetzen. Klinische Forschung beinhaltet vielfältige Risiken, vor allem das Risiko des in eine klinische Prüfung eingebundenen Patienten, ausserdem doch die Risiken, falsche Schlussfolgerungen aus schlechten Studien zu ziehen. Daher müssen höchste Qualitätsansprüche an die Organisation klinischer Forschungen gestellt werden. Die prospektiv randomisierte Doppelblinduntersuchung stellt zweifelsohne das beste Design dar. Dabei entstehen unter anderem schwierige Probleme bei der Aufklärung des Patienten. Im Zusammenhang mit Publikationen kann es zu einer Verzerrung des objektiven Bildes kommen. Deshalb ist eine umfassende Publikation aller durchgeführten Studien erstrebenswert. Klinische Forschung stellt somit eine grosse intellektuelle, aber auch ethische Herausforderung dar.
