Abstract
A pair of normal siamangs at the Zurich Zoo had recently a viable first-born with a large supernumerary digit on the ulnar side of each hand and on the tibial side of each foot. No other anomalies could be found in this specimen, except that its hands and feet are somewhat larger than in two other newborn siamangs, and that there is as yet no ossification center in its talus. From a brief review of the frequency of digital malformations, and particularly of polydactylism in man and other primates, it appears that the spontaneous occurrence of such anomalies may be exceptionally common in Hylobatidae. The osseous development and the relative weight at birth have progressed much less in the available siamangs than in gibbons.
