First page of Evans and his index

Neurologists use the eponymous Evans Index to measure cerebral ventricles. It was formulated in 1942 by the Detroit radiologist William A. Evans (1907-1956). The index represents the ratio between the cerebral ventricles' frontal horns' maximal width and the skull's internal diameter. It was developed after studying pneumoencephalography (PEG) in hydrocephalic children. A cut-off value of 0.30 is considered as a pathological sign of ventriculomegaly. This value was found to be valid even nowadays in adults studied by CT or MRI but with less predictive value than in younger adults.
