Relations between reading disturbances and oculomotor disturbances are discussed. It is shown that disorders of eye movements may produce reading disturbances in different ways. By comparison, some clinical observations of reading difficulties in the presence of oculomotor disturbances are reported from the literature. The difficulty in separating the oculomotor factors from the semantic factors involved in reading is stressed, normal reading being possible within a wide range of eye movement patterns. It is questioned whether a reliable conclusion on the cause of a reading disability can be based only on the knowledge of eye movement patterns during reading.
