Dose-response curves were obtained from 9 adult control subjects and 18 patients with duodenal ulcer, both with s.c. histamine acid phosphate (1.6, 2.0, 2.4, 2.8, 3.2 mg) and s.c. pentagastrin (250, 300, 350, 400, 450 μg) in single dose at different intervals of time with a view to compare the highest values of acid output. There was no significant difference between the average highest values of acid output in response to these two stimuli. The results showed that values of acid output remained steady in the majority of subjects while 6 of 27 subjects showed an appreciable decrease or increase.
