Article Collection: Prehabilitation: Nutritional Interventions and Metabolic Mechanisms
Prehabilitation has become a very promising strategy for reducing severe complications in high-risk patients who will undergo major surgery. Prehabilitation often includes a trimodal combination of nutrition, endurance and resistance training, and some psychological support. Focusing on nutrition and metabolism, this article collection in Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism highlights recent advances and the potential for prehabilitation programs to improve surgical outcomes. The collection includes articles on immune function, metabolic flexibility, and body composition, as well as points to the need for integrating sex- and gender-specific considerations, standardizing protocols, and addressing challenges in resource utilization.
