Article Collection: Brain Evolution - From Gene Expression to Neural Circuits and Behaviors. Proceedings of ECCN 2022
Brain evolution is the evolution of brain development. Thus, to understand how the highly complex structure of our brain emerged during evolution, we need to understand the evolution of its development. In this special issue, we review the variations in the development of the pallium that enabled the production of complex forebrains in vertebrates. The developmental trajectories of pallial cells are fundamental to understanding evolutionary changes and homologies. We propose that an accumulation of subtle modifications from very early brain development accounted for the diversification of vertebrate pallia and the independent origins of complex pallia in distantly related vertebrates.
