The unusual finding by Kiley and Wohnus (1968) of “true” hybrids from a Bufo americanus ♀ × Rana pipiens ♂ mating has been controverted by Bogart et al. (1969). The latter argued, on theoretical grounds, that the alleged hybrid embryos were rather gynogenetic diploid embryos. We present experimental evidence that the sperm of the leopard frog (Rana pipiens) lacks the competence to penetrate or activate the egg of a toad of the genus Bufo. We suggest that the presumed hybrid embryos were derived from eggs of Bufo americanus inseminated (accidentally) by a male of the same species.
