Die segmentale arterielle und venose Versorgung der menschlichen Milz ist für organerhaltende Operationen von groβer Bedeutung. Die Milz besteht aus den Kompartimenten rote Pulpa, Marginalzone und weiβe Pulpa, die noch weiter in Follikel und periarterioläre lymphatische Begleitscheide unterteilt werden kann. Jedes Kompartiment hat eine typische Zusammensetzung lymphatischer Subpopulationen, Makrophagen und dendritischer Zellen. Daraus lassen sich die speziellen Funktionen dieser Kompartimente und die nach Entfernung der Milz auftretenden Symptome erklären. Bei der Regeneration von autotransplantierten Milzgeweben entwickeln sich die Kompartimente in einer typischen Sequenz. Nur die Kombination verschiedener morphologischer und funktioneller Techniken erlaubt die Gewinnung weiterer Erkenntnisse über die funktionelle Anatomie der Milz.
