Hailing from neutral Netherlands, Van Scholven felt priviledged to be able to draw on the experience of both sides during WWI as he explains in the introduction and the subtitle to his treatise on trauma and the nervous system. The war unfortunately offered ample opportunity to test many assumptions and allegations concerning the formation of spinal cord pathologies following trauma.
