Die Autorin argumentiert, dass die ethische Haltung eine Entwicklungsposition ist, die aber im Unterschied zur Kleinianischen Theorie (von der paranoid-schizoiden zur depressiven Position) die teleologische Implikation der Entwicklung des Selbst betont, in der die angeborene Fähigkeit des Selbst, durch den Prozess der Individuation es selbst zu werden, betont wird. Das Ringen um psychologische Ganzheit und die Integration des projizierten Schattens vollzieht sich unter Schmerz und erfordert Opfer. Es ist aber auch befriedigend für das Selbst, ständig wachsende Zustände der Wahrheit, der moralischen Freiheit, des Sinnes und des Wertes zu erreichen. Um eine Übereinkunft zwischen den sich widersprechenden Bedürfnissen nach Nähe und Unterscheidung zu erreichen, muss das Selbst fortwährend mit sich und dem nahen Anderen kämpfen. Die Gefahren dieses Kampfes sind in den Variationen narzisstischer Objektbeziehungen ausserhalb und innerhalb des Behandlungszimmers sichtbar. Eine ethische Haltung reflektiert die analytische Beziehung selbst, in der beide Partner sich dem jeweils Anderen zur Verfügung stellen und durch die Begegnung mit dem jeweils Anderen verändert werden dürften.
