Abstract
Four Doppler echocardiographie methods for the quantification of aortic regurgitant flow were compared in a group of 56 patients: 24 patients with isolated aortic regurgitation (AR) and 32 patients with combined aortic valve lesions (AR plus aortic stenosis; AS). We used the following indices in order to assess AR: (1) the W(1)index based on the analysis of the flow in the ascending aorta; (2) the W(2) index estimated by analysis of the flow in the descending aorta; (3) the pulsed Doppler flow mapping method in the left ventricle outflow tract, and (4) the continuous-wave Doppler method - pressure halftime. Good correlations were found between analyzed indices and invasive data: W(1) index -0.82 (AR -0.89, AR + AS -0.71); W(2) index -0.80 (AR -0.81, AR + AS -0.80); pulsed Doppler flow mapping -0.85 (in patients with mitral stenosis -0.76), and pressure halftime method -0.87 (in all groups of patients). Most useful for the quantification of AR is the pressure halftime method.
