Adult albino rats were given intracardiac injections of copper sulphate, phenylhydrazine and antiserum to produce equivalent hemolysis. After 24, 48 and 72 h, 5 and 7 days the reticuloendothelial cells in the marginal zone of the spleen were studied. After copper sulphate these cells proliferate rapidly to form a band 8-10 layers wide after the 5th day. On the 7th day the perivascular lymphoid cells are almost completely replaced. Mitoses are prominent, and stem and plasmacytoid cells are formed as in an antigenic response. Phenylhydrazine and antiserum produced comparatively low proliferation. It is concluded that copper produces a prominent proliferative activity due to its stimulant action on cellular metabolism.
