Abstract
The synthesis and transfer of proteins from the Schwann cell cytoplasm to the myelin sheath and axon of chicken embryos have been investigated with electron microscope radioautography. At early time intervals after the intravenous injection of 3H-proline into 18-day-old chicken embryos, the newly synthesized proteins are mainly collected in the Schwann cell cytoplasm with a preponderance in the Golgi area. Later, the bulk of labeled proteins migrate along the myelin sheath and a small portion is transferred to the axon. Most of the transferred proteins are conveyed through the regions of inner and outer mesaxons.
